Gulf of Taran
The Gulf of Taran is, despite a seemingly calm exterior, known as the Ship’s Morgue. Indeed, the calm waves cover up a strangely violent gulf, which swallows ships whole. The entire Gulf is littered with the wreckage of ships dating back to before the region was even fully settled.
The cause of the wreckages are multiple – some say a kraken lurks beneath the surface, while other contend the frequent appearance of ghost ships must drive the crews mad, and force them to drive their ships upon the rocks. For whatever reason, only ships in the direst of need stray into the Gulf.
The coast, however, is less ominous and home to a surprisingly cheery gnomish population who comb the beaches for the remnants of ships. These towns live well, as, despite the Gulf’s reputation, it has become a haven for pirates, who are not immune to the wiles of the ocean. The foolhardy criminals frequently sink, their treasures washing upon the shore to be picked up by the gnomes.
